Here in the Lake District we make a whole family of bears and other animals, all hand carved from solid timber for your garden or patio.
You can choose from the range of characters shown here, or maybe design your own.
All our chainsaw carvings have a unique rough cut appearance, and our special finishing process removes all rough finishes whilst retaining a rustic quality that tells you the bears are made for the outdoor life
Each chainsaw carving is individually hand finished in a choice of coloured natural wood stain which shows off the grain of the wood. You may choose to maintain the workshop finish over the years but even if left to the elements the appearance can be enhanced by natural weathering.
In either case your chainsaw carving will benefit from a coat of clear preservative perhaps once a year to keep it free from burrowing insects and fungus.
Cumbrian carvings was born in 1993 on the shores of Derwent Water here in the Lake District. The company was then known as Derwent Bay Bears and was started by Symon Willan and Simon Jackson.
It was a popular destination for Hikers, schools and day trippers alike for 12 years, many of you reading this will have visited us there
In 2005 the lease expired and the site was reclaimed by the owners. With no obvious premises to move to, and Simon Jackson wanting to pursue other ventures, the company was wound up.
Later that same year another carver, Keith Turner, joined forces with Symon Willan to form a new company, Cumbrian Carvings, Working from some old quarry buildings, but with no access for the general public it was far from ideal. Two years later our present premises became available, we moved in January 2007.
Work is still ongoing to improve the buildings etc. to make it more visitor friendly, We have built a viewing gallery so you can be safely under cover to watch us carve, we will also have a testimonial wall where we will display letters and photos from customers and school children who have received one of our carvings.
